About Clare Allington

So, I’m Clare Allington… Just graduated from Southampton Solent University with a degree in Fashion Design. I’m originally from the little village of Barnham (near Chichester on the South Coast of England!) where I first established my love for the arts I suppose. Apparently it runs in the blood… my great great aunt was a royal academy artist, and my grandfather is incredibly talented when it comes to fine art … and then you get to my parents. Although neither of them would ever admit it they are both really creative, my dad through carpentry and my mum, well she’s the one who first got me started on my road to fashion. I was taught to use the sewing machine at 9 and have never stopped really, I absolutely love it. Although I’ve relocated to Southampton now, they still aid me hugely with the development of my ideas.

So, University… It was hard, really time consuming and mentally draining. Throughout my time studying, whenever I met new people they would always ask what I was studying and as soon as the words have left your mouth this look of just surprise comes over their face, for some obscure reason it is seen as an odd degree choice, which is odd seeing as fashion is one of the largest industries in the world. You get past it, the guys I have lived with over the 3 years I studied all have a renewed appreciation for the fashion world and of how much hard work it takes to do an arts degree. It was worth it, all the nights spent awake sewing the last few buttons onto a garment and annotating sketchbooks all became worth it the moment I watched my first outfit come down the catwalk in my first ever catwalk show.

Things that inspire me… Colour, I think it is so important. I have two sort of philosophies on using it. Firstly, its really hard to design an entire collection using only one colour, because there is nothing to hide behind, the construction details are really key to its success. However, it’s even harder to design a collection combining many different colours together and make it look good. Bad choices, taste and combinations are more obvious when they go wrong. So, to me using colour well is an art form I find really inspiring, it influences my work hugely.

My plans for the future are starting to come to life! My ultimate goal is to go self-employed and start my own fashion brand… 'The boutique' section of the website is due to go live this year where I will begin to sell me own original produce... It will begin with children's wear, and gradually build to women's wear as I develop the designs and collections. So watch this space... and keep looking back!

Collections

My online portfolio… a sneak peak at some of the collections I’ve produced. A variation of work from Skiwear, through Children’s wear to clothing especially for the Catwalk can be found here…

  • In The Dollhouse

    In The Dollhouse

“In the Dollhouse” was a collection of women’s wear created in 2009 inspired by two sources; Barbie’s 40th birthday and Japanese ‘Harajuku’ street culture. The two inspirations combined to create a plastic-fantastic doll-like image that was vibrant and eclectic.

  • Handle With Care

    Handle With Care

“Handle with Care” was a collection designed in 2008 under the inspiration of ‘The Body.’ A collection of pieces was designed, however only 1 inspirational piece was created to represent and show the essence of what the collection stood for.
